I have noticed lately the amount of homeless wandering the streets. The weather is getting warmer, and often are thoughts of helping those in need are not as frequent as in the winter. We think to ourselves, that they are not cold, so they must be ok. I realized this is not the case at church when they announced that the homeless shelter for women and children that they have opened is busting at the seams. They are actually having to turn families away at this time because there is simply no more space. This particular shelter helps families by giving them an address to help them find work, gives them training, a room and food. But there are overnight rooms for families who have just lost their home, or need a place to stay to get off the streets.
This crisis of sorts as opened my eyes to those around me, and I have noticed the homeless in a big way. So here are a few things you can do to aid your local shelters and homeless population.
1. Always have water bottles on hand in your car and hand them out.
2. Have fruit and crackers available to hand out to those on street corners. Yes I know that some will be ungrateful, but there are others who really just need a healthy meal.
3. My church has put together hygiene kits containing hand wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste and a $5 grocery store gift card. That way, they can clean up a little before buying a meal.
4. Our church also has a program called adopt a box which is basically a community garden. Each person that has signed up is in charge of a garden box located behind our church. My kids signed up for a box to take care of and plant. When the produce is ready, it all goes to the local shelter. Fresh, healthy. My kids were so excited about this, that they begged to create a little area in our garden to give more food.
These are all small ways in which we can help others who are truly struggling and need an extra hand. If you have any other ideas, please share in the comments. Would love to hear them.
Have a great day!
